I felt a lovely calm throughout the experience, and felt constantly rewarded. I was worried in the beginning when the puzzles seemed easy, but they got plenty challenging further along. The stories were lovely, including the ending of the main storyline. I loved collecting the little lightpools for the texts, but I would've hoped soe of them didn't contain clues. I started being afraid of opening them in case I would feel cheated to the answer to the puzzle at hand. I did encounter a bug apparently known on some hardware - I couldn't see the ice pillars. Had to check videos for their placement to be able to solve the puzzles. This is literally the only negative thing I have to say.I finished the game in roughly 13,5h, which is a very nice length for a game like Xing.I would recommend Xing to anyone that likes puzzle games, and STRONGLY recommend to anyone liking a game with feeling, like RiME!. I felt I needed to play the first chapter in this game before I wrote a solid review. I am playing this game on my PC but will definitely return to it in VR. It is a beautiful vacation from all my worries. So far the puzzles have been linear and, push button logic to cross platforms and an overly drastic hint system. The game has very few bugs and there are only a couple things that I think should be polished so far. One being falling inbetween land water and platforms. I find myself getting stuck a lot, while it is easy to jump out it is a little jarring to the overall narrative and relaxing feel of the game. I enjoyed the shallow poetry through the first door. It had very ABAB rhyming structure which felt very childish for a game that definitely was written for an older crowd. Too much was aid and it was overly symbolic. I hope this strcuture chagnes in the second door. I also hope the puzzles become more integrated with the environment. This doesn't feel repetitive like the talos principle, but the puzzles are very similar to other games I've played. They day night cycle isn't unique enough for me to give it 5 stars, but this is definitely a 5 star title for VR even though I haven't touched that part. Very few games give off that high level immersion that this is doing on a flat screen. I might come back and write more later as things unfold, but for now I definitely recommend picking up the game. It's a great way to spend 20 bucks!. The art design/graphics, and especially the soundtrack, are amazing. The music is reminiscent of the last Ecco the Dolphin game. Unfortunately, the puzzles are braindead simple, the rhyming "poems" are hamfisted and cheesy, and the game is overall boring. At times it ventures into walking simulator territory. If you're looking for puzzles on the level of Myst, you'll be disappointed. The presentation is almost able to prop up the lack of substance, but not really.. First impressions + review at the end here:https://youtu.be/ibQ0h3C1IawIf you don't want to watch a video, that's cool! Here's a summary:XING: The Land Beyond is an atmospheric first-person puzzle adventure for both desktop and VR. You are a soul escaping the world of the living and travelling the lands of the dead. The first thing you will notice when you launch this game is that the game is very beautiful. The flat screen video might not justify it well enough, as it is gorgeous in VR. We didn’t even set our graphics in the highest settings, because our CPU couldn’t handle both recording and the high settings at the same time (we use an i7 + 1070). But if you put everything on high, it is definitely beautiful. The game has soothing ambiance too, which makes it very relaxing to launch the game and be totally immersed in a fantasy world. The nice sound design definitely adds to this and we love it.At first the puzzles seemed quite easy and linear, but thankfully they become harder over time. Especially when you find out that you can only use certain items by day and others by night. It takes some time exploring everything and finding out what you have to do, but definitely worth it.Something that we did encounter in VR was that texts were blurry in VR. Mostly happened in the menus, making them hard to read. On desktop everything was good. In VR everything feels great. You get free locomotion, snap turning and smooth rotation which definitely helps. Especially if you have a smaller space. Free locomotion was also very comfortable. It seems like the game has a good length as well as we have been playing for almost an hour and we could see that we were only halfway of the first door. In the beginning we could see that there are 4 doors if I remember it correctly, which could indicate that there is enough content. However we haven’t been able to finish this game yet, so our opinion might change after progressing more. We think this game is amazing. It is definitely something for people who like puzzles and more casual, relaxing games that you can dive into for hours. If you are looking for action though, this might not be something for you. TLDR; Beautiful polished game with a casual relaxing feel. Recommended for anyone who loves puzzling in VR.. A delight from start to finish. Marvellous to be transported in VR to beautiful and exotic locales and to be able to leisurely solve the fairly challenging puzzles. I understand the creators are somewhat out of pocket in spite of making this superb game--I would pay top dollar for added levels or something in a similar vein.
